Thanks Karl, but I'm using KDE, so that didn't work, however the command in my
last messaage (alsamixer -c 1) did work.

Find the Micophone and by default it is turned OFF. Clear that and your
mike will work.

Why is it switched off? That's crazy.

At least I know how to troubleshoot this in future.

I believe the microphone is muted by default because of feedback
problems with some laptops on boot. So you have to unmute the mic,
and adjust it for your system.
