On Tue, 28 Aug 2007 01:45:37 -0500tried both and still same result. last thing i see before a blank screen is starting smartd ok........ then it goes blank.

When you see the Grub menu, it gives you an option to edit the
boot command
line. Add a "1" or a "3" to the end of that line, then boot from
it and see
what happens.
