Are you sure you can dd onto (or rather into) a larger partition?
I tried that some years ago, and it led to confusion, IIRC.

I have successfully dd-ed onto a partition of exactly the same size,
copying Windows (I think Windows-2000) onto a larger disk,
when I didn't have the original CDs.

I don't see any necessity to do this with Linux;
dd is simply the wrong tool for the job.
