CTRL-ALT-PLUS or CTRL-ALT-MINUS a few times to cycle through available
display modes.

Failing that, switch the card driver in xorg.conf to "vesa".

If you still can't get a display, use elinks or lynx to get the driver
- telinit to level 1 and install it.

PS - not sure on the yum problem - maybe 'yum upgrade yum'?
