I'd like to start Firefox on a remote machine (FC5) and have it

(or I'm too dumb). (DISPLAY is fine, I can use other remote X programs
without problems.)

Try:

MOZ_NO_REMOTE=1 firefox

Presuming there's no firefox running for that user on the remote machine.

There's also a -no-remote option that you can use on the command
line.
