I had a similar problem with a totally different machine, but solved it by assuming the display wasn't being recognized. So I used the hardware admin to set the display to generic 1280x1024 LCD and then selected the resolution from the preferences menu.


Unfortunately, 1280x1024 is not an option from System->Preferences->Hardware->Screen Resolution or System->Administration->Display. I have added 1280x1024 to the mode line in my Xorg.conf file and the display resolution is now correct but the top menu bar (GNOME) is not the correct size and the GDM login scrren size is not correct.

What I set was the display hardware type, to "generic 1280x1024" which then worked fine. After that you can select the matching screen resolutions.
