What is causing these settings changes in xorg.conf ?
The current behaviour of X is to poll the hardware, and automatically
select usable display modes according to what they claim their abilities
to be (monitor and display adaptor). Then it automatically picks the
highest it can manage.
If you want a lower resolution, set it as a user preference (screen
resolution option in the user preferences section of the Gnome menus).
Some people have trouble with certain hardware producing bad answers
when it's polled (e.g. not getting as a high a resolution mode as they
want, despite the hardware actually supporting it; or getting modes that
simply do not work), and find that they have to manually pick the right
monitor type from the system Xorg configuration.

The problem is even more annoying when xvidtune is used to adjust the
screen size and centering parameters on a monitor which isn't auto-adjust
and the modeline is ignored at subsequent bootups. See

This bug report has been ignored for 1.5 years and will be closed unless
someone running FC7 or FC8 takes action. (I'm still on FC6.) Per the
last comment posted 2008/04/03 for this bug:
"Based on the date this bug was created, it appears to have been reported
against rawhide during the development of a Fedora release that is no
longer maintained. In order to refocus our efforts as a project we are
flagging all of the open bugs for releases which are no longer
maintained. If this bug remains in NEEDINFO thirty (30) days from now,
we will automatically close it.
If you can reproduce this bug in a maintained Fedora version (7, 8, or
rawhide), please change this bug to the respective version and change
