have a look at /etc/X11/xorg.conf, 'section monitor'.

this may be what you are asking about.

poc,

my apologies, it was late, early morning, when i saw your post and
some how (tired and worn out playing with f8 install) i missed reading;

This is F9-pre, and there is no /etc/X11/xorg.conf file.

I switched to a console, did "init 3" and ran system-config-display.
This worked perfectly and created the xorg.conf file.

where did system-config-display put 'xorg.conf'? i would guess it would have
gone under /etc/X11. being f9-pre, this is a guess, but logical that it would
not be changed.

of times that i have lost a file from power loss or lockup and hard reset, was
because it was open. i would not think that x11 would hold a config file open
when it only needs to read it. then again.

had you made any changes to your x11 setup you should have at least had .old
file.

i was thinking that x had a 'universal' config file, but not sure. skimming
back thru my x11r5, i found nothing. most of configs back them where for
mainframe terminal configs, so that would not show a lot for pc terminals
as most of it is now.

also, you never know where disk heads are when something goes wrong.

you should give some serious thought to putting an ups in line with mains.
