No status messages on restart

For some reason whenever I restart Fedora 9 I don't get the normal status messages during shutdown that I got with F8. I get the standard runlevel 3 login screen. It pauses and finally says "Restarting..." and restarts.
A few times after I first installed it (clean install) it gave a quick message that I never could quite read about "not being able to connect to system message bus" but unfortunately I haven't been able to see this message. Is it logged somewhere?
Any help would be appreciated.
