I have a machine with an apparently failing hard drive, which I
plan to give away to someone who may replace the drive. Of
course I want
my password and root's password off it.

It sounds like you have nothing on the machine that you care about.
Just do a fresh install keeping all of the defaults. I watch TV while
the install is humming. Better yet, do it in front of them so they can
see that even an idiot ( me ) can do it.

As to your question, I think 'usermod -l alpha beta' should do the
trick.
