strange. did you lose just the 'back arrow'?
right click on 'navigation bar', select 'customize', drag and drop
navigation arrows back to 'navigation bar'

I see now that I had turned off the navigation toolbar -
or perhaps this was done automatically when I installed the google toolbar?
In any case, right-clicking as advised brought up the option
to re-install the navigation toolbar, which did the trick.
