kuser problem

I enter

fredsilsbee
Fred Silsbee
UID 501(already there)
select shell bash
home /home/fredsilsbee

account disabled ->unchecked

password set

added group "wheel"

when I hit OK, the entry in the user list

shows only the username and the full name with UID=0...everything else is vacant

I've used kuser before and what could be simpler?

Years ago I edited the /etc/passwd file directly as matter of routine.
