I just kept telling nano ^W till it looped -- and found the term
innumerable times in commented discussion which might as well have been
in Cuneiform Hittite, but no uncommented line such as "hostname= "

Meanwhile, I went ahead with your other directions, including
setting a network proxy (which I've never looked at, let alone used) --
and now none of my browsers connect. I feel like Mickey Mouse fighting
brooms ....
