/proc/sys/kernel/core_pattern just contains:

As I'm not able to edit this file, I'm not entirely clear on what
"resetting it to 'core'" means.
As root, "echo core > /proc/sys/kernel/core_pattern" should work.
What went wrong here, and how might I repair it?
No idea about the crash, but you can reset the file by writing to it (as root).
