Hmm, tried the Windows method? Change the setting, change it back
again, log out and back in again...
You put your config files in, you take your config files out.
You do the hokey cokey and your turn yourself around...
The other thing that comes to mind might be strange permissions or
SELinux contexts on the Desktop directory, itself.
I tried all the hokey pokey steps I could think of and Selinux is disabled.
But I will continue to think about it It is really strange.
