You should be able to do this without hacking config files, at least
providing your X server supports RandR as the recent ones do.
To add ... AKAIK the newer display configuration tools are capable of
configuring this rather easily.
Its not as simple as it first appears... I'll post a question on this in
a new thread in a bit.
