Thanks a lot for the tip.
But actually i installed again the driver from rpmfuion, since it's
quite up-to-date already.
I got better 3D acceleration with near zero effort, ;)
the problem with gnome shell persists, but kde is doing a good job for now.

download the source rpm from rpmfusion and install it
make whatever changes you want to the sources (which is sort of
impossible since ATI distributes a compiled binary)
rebuild using the spec file from rpmfusion
