if op does have boot problems, he may need to try a live cd and install
from it.


If I remember correctly, the cdrom preceeded the hard disk in the boot
order
on Compaqs of that vintage.

i believe you are correct on that one.


The note on KNOPPIX live cd applies to Fedora 10 and newer as well. The cd
spins forever.
