I hadn't thought of the power supply as I assumed that if that were the problem, everything would go down rather than selective components as it got worse and worse. Took a look on eBay and pwoer supplies and certainly cheaper than motherboards --- I'm seeing $60-$90 range. I can see a whole lot of xw8000 stuff and it doesn't look like any of them have a bid.

Given its age and that I have two other older machines (HP x4000 ... both happily on F16 Xfce), I'm still thinking that I'm better off putting any money into a new 64bit system. But I'm going to think about it for a day as "under $100" warrants consideration.

If I knew someone with a spare that I could test to verify that it was, in fact, the power supply (or motherboard or whatever), it would certain make the gamble better.
