Besides that I think it has some advantages.
* It is cleaner (no edges)
* It is easier to see (for a11y and on LCD screens in sunlight)

I'd like to make this change for gnome-screensaver but I'd like your
opinion before asking the release-team for approval.
Does the HIG address this?
Isn't that already what GDM uses nowadays?
