If you can find out what's starting the daemon,

I found out gconf was failing because I had removed gstreamer (trying to
solve a dependency issue under Gentoo) without realising what exactly
depended on it. So I guess something requiring gstreamer interacted with
gconf and took it down with it. I suppose it would've been nice to have
gotten a bit more info somehow from gconf but after reinstalling gstreamer
all is fine now, sorry for the noise
