I want to have the Gnome Archive Manager fired up automatically with

However, for some reason this has stopped working recently, e.g. a
dialog box is opened asking me to choose a program to run.
How can I fix this permanently?

Software is not manufactured, it is something you write and publish.
Keep Europe free from software patents, we do not want censorship

You do not examine legislation in the light of the benefits it will
convey if properly administered, but in the light of the wrongs it
would do and the harms it would cause if improperly administered.
