command line gnome menu editor

Hi,

I am searching a command line menu editor. In particular, on a panel I
would like to create a drawer, and add several launchers (customized for
linux distribution and computer location) to it. I would really like to
avoid to write a script which creates or edits the needed directories and
%gconf.xml files.

Does a tool exist which does that? Thanks,

Michael
