Gnome won't work for user.

After assembling a new computer, I installed Fedora Core 5 with the
usual stuff including Gnome. This computer consists of Tyan S2865ANRF
main board, AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+ Dual-Core processor, 2 GB RAM, PNY
Quadro FX 1500 256 MB graphics card, Acer AL2423WR 24" WUXGA 1920 x 1200
DVI LCD, and an old (5 pound) Compaq keyboard (the best keyboard I've had).

Gnome started up first try, as usual, for user "bob". It was running at
1280x1024 as installed, and I set up some favorite things, then went to
System - Preferences - Screen Resolution. The monitor model was not
available, but 1920x1200 was. I chose that and it worked; no problem.

The most useless key on the PC keyboard is "Num Lock". The PC keyboard
has cursor keys. The number pad should always be active. I've used
calculators and other number machines all my life. At the risk of being
redundant, the number pad should always be active.

I used "yum -y install numlockx". Gnome will not work for the user
anymore. It works fine for root. Obviously, a permissions problem. It's
hard to see how NomlockX could cause this, but I have nothing else to go
on. I could reinstall Gnome, but that's giving up.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks for your help,
