Per user .desktop files

Hi,
In earlier versions of GNOME, such as 2.4, the standard location for placing
.desktop
files (panel launchers) used to be ~/.gnome2/vfolders/applications. If
corresponding
entries were added to the applications.vfolder-info file, then the shortcuts
would
appear in the user's Applications menu.
Has this been changed in recent versions of GNOME? If yes, than what's the
way to
create panel launchers / shortcuts for a (non-root) user under the
Applications menu?
What would be the default standard directory for placing per-user's .desktop
files?
Thanks in advance.
