Size of icons on the desktop

I am running a Fedora Core 6 system with the Gnome desktop. The icons on
the desktop seem rather large, but I can't find any way to resize them
(as a group). Rightclick->stretch lets me resize one single icon, but
then I can only eyeball whether they are all the same size. And I DON'T
want to change the sizes of icon on the panel. (I like a double-high
panel like the old Gnome 1.x setup, and large icons to fit there).
And speaking of sizes, it there a way to change the default size of a
Gnome-terminal?
I DO NOT have the Gnome-Settings-Daemon running, it gives me a nasty
message that it cannot be started every time I boot up, and I haven't
been able to figure out that problem, either, I just work around it.
