I am running a Fedora Core 6 system with the Gnome desktop. The icons on
the desktop seem rather large, but I can't find any way to resize them

want to change the sizes of icon on the panel.
Preferences->File Management (or Edit->Preferences in a Nautilus
window), Views tab, Icon View Defaults. There you can change the
default size for all file manager icons, which includes the desktop--
there's no way to do the desktop separately AFAIK, other than manually.
