It's best to follow the GNOME support that your distribution provides.
There is a meta-package called "ubuntu-desktop" which when you install
it should bring in the necessary packages.
I would suggest to have a look on the Ubuntu Wiki and UbuntuForums for
testimonials of people going throught his route for any extra tips and
tricks.
