You can try jhbuild,

JhBuild is a build system takes care of downloading the source code
and building the packages. It is semi-automatic in the sense that when
a compilation warning happens, you can dive in, fix it, and let it
continue compiling.

Also, if you have no specific reason to compile 2.18, you can try the
latest (2.19).
