ctl-alt-f8 works fine. I know that by renaming the defective home
directory and by copying a virgin home directory to replace the logon
which is defective, that I can laboriously do the repair. Is there a
simpler way to do the repair?

Maybe some app intercepts these shortcuts? Did you have a look at the
keyboard and keyboard shortcuts preferences for that user?
