I'm deploying a group of workstations running opensuse & gnome. The
gnome-volume-manager is set by default to make banshee run when an audio
CD is inserted. I need to disable this (as a default) so that users can
run grip instead without banshee loading. I can do this for one user in
the control panel using the "Removable Drives & Media" settings, but I
can't seem to find where that setting is stored so I can copy it to
/etc/skel to make it the default setting. Can anyone please point me in
the right direction?

In my experience, configuring system defaults for all users in GNOME
requires jumping through ridiculous hoops. I'd be glad to be proved
wrong.

However, if you are looking for files to put in /etc/skel then
~/.gconf/desktop/gnome/volume_manager/%gconf.xml might actually work.

It looks like that file has the setting I need - I'll give it try
in /etc/skel. Thanks for the quick reply :-)

Rather than dumping files in /etc/skel, you could just take
advantage of the fact that GConf has a built-in mechanism
for setting default and mandatory settings for all users.

Check out the section on GConf in the admin guide:
http://library.gnome.org/admin/system-admin-guide/stable/gconf-0.html.en

And here's how to work with default and mandatory settings
using the Configuration Editor:
http://library.gnome.org/users/gconf-editor/stable/defaults-mandatory.html.en

If you're doing a lot of customizations, you might want to
check out Sabayon:
