I am also running Gnome 2.20 (2.20.0-7). As you suggested I dragged the
'Install Software' menu item onto a terminal which pointed me to the
script /usr/bin/package-manager. There I found the glorious environment
variable XDG_UTILS_DEBUG_LEVEL which I set =1.
Now the script at least tells me why it dies, ie. Invalid
MIT_MAGIC_COOKIE-1
Will have to read up on X server access control but at least know where
to start looking.
