So did I a few days ago. In my case the problem had to with a messed up
.Xauthority or whatever Gnome uses for thr root user. I found out
looking at the /var/log/Xorg.... log which showed refused connections.

Nothing there, just the error I get when my nvidia driver and the GLX driver
conflict (looks like trouble, but I don't see any manifestations of it).
