Is gnome-volume-manager running when you connect removable drives?
Yes:
$ ps -aux | grep gnome-volume-manager
pmatos 5466 0.0 0.6 19616 6536 ? Ss 12:53 0:00
gnome-volume-manager --sm-disable
With this running, I can connect whatever and nothing happens.
