pmount is optional, but you need recent versions of hal+dbus.
on gentoo, just emerge hal+dbus, be sure to add hald to default runlevel.

I knew it needed something but wasn't sure what. Wouldn't submount and
some of the others work though? Just wondering if anyone tried it.
