[kde] .au files do not play in kde 3.4.2 supplied with Mandriva 2006

I build KDE 3.4.2 from source and installed it onto a system bsed on Mandriva
9.2. AU sound files played perfectly with Kaboodle etc. AU files were lised
as recognised file types.
I replaced my old system with Mandriva 2006. No au files zill play, nor are
they recognised.
What is the difference? What library files are required for playing them? Do
they need a mime registration?
