I recently upgraded to fedora core 5 and yum-installed kmail. I was
able to configure kmail so I can receive messages, but when I send an
email it goes into the outbox and stays there.

When I try to send a message I get a notice that "this message will not
be signed" which I don't understand and another that "this message will
not be encrypted" and a notice that "Sending only partially encrypted
messages might violate site policy and/or leak sensitive information."

Check the settings in "Settings > Configure kmail > Security"

And also "Settings > Configure kmail > Warnings"
You might try disabling the warnings having to do with sending unencrypted
messages.
Removed all warnings -- no change.

How do I find out which version of kmail I have? "rpm -q kmail" says it
isn't installed.

Never mind about the version. I tried "kmail --version"
Qt: 3.3.5
KDE: 3.5.2-0.2.fc5 Red Hat
KMail: 1.9.1

This seems strange to me.
When I get the message "Could not connect to smtp.central.cox.net" the
warning also says "The following transport protocol was used -- bbales"
I thought the transport protocol should be smtp????

And it says "bbales" even when I am sending mail from a different email
address, but I can't find anywhere that bbales could be interpreted as a
protocol.
