I right click on the device on suse 10 also offers unmount / eject.

I dont think this is appropriate, especially for usb hot pluggable drives.
The drive maybe in use when unplugged. There must be a process followed to
unplug. Here on kubuntu 6.06 i have do <right click->safely remove> on the
drive before physically unplugging.
