If I let KMail pick the encoding automatically I just see boxes. Likewise if I
manually choose utf-8. If I, however, choose iso-8859-1, iso-8859-15 or
windows-1252 your diacritical characters show up perfectly.

Perhaps changing the character encoding in KMail might help. (Settings
Configure KMail >Appearance >Message Window)
