I had the same problem, and yes, it was right after an 'upgrade.' WhenSorry, that is the extent of my experience with KDE and menus.
I type in kbuildsycoca, I get the following lines:
Warning: kbuildsycoa is unable to register with DCOP.
kbuidsycoca running...
kbuidsycoca running...
Reusing existing ksycoca
kbuidsycoca: WARNING: Load error ()
KWrited - Listening on Device /dev/pts/4
kded: Launching previous backup analyse.
Then, it goes back to the command prompt. Still no menu :(
Any ideas? Anyone . . . Anyone . . . Bueller?
Thanks

I have never paid attention to the output when running it, but this may
be part of the problem
Warning: kbuildsycoa is unable to register with DCOP.
I have noticed this before ...
Reusing existing ksycoca
And I don't know about these...
kbuidsycoca: WARNING: Load error ()
KWrited - Listening on Device /dev/pts/4
kded: Launching previous backup analyse.
You might try to mv ~/.config ~/.config.bu or something and try again
(to build a new ksycoca?)
and then you have the .config.bu to help restore your personal settings
Also try a different user (create a new one or even try root) and see if
things are normal. If they are
normal, you'll at least have something to go on. compare the .config
files and the .kde files to see
what's different.
