Is it possible to have Kate automatically open files in
read-only mode when I don't have write permission on them?

Since the permissions set on the file will determine what kate
(as you) can do with the file, trying to save changes to it will
cause an error.

I'm referring to the menu entry "tools->read only mode". When this is
on you can't modify the *displayed* text.

When I open a file that I can't write to, it's usually because
I'm just viewing the file, or occasionally because I'm editing the
wrong copy of the file. In either case it's irritating that Kate lets
me change the memory copy.

Given that Kate has "tools->read only mode", it would be nice if it
could pick-up the initial state of this from the file permissions.
