Hi,

I plan to install Kubuntu as a test in my machine and use it for some
time as dual boot with my current instalation which is Mandriva

Old:KDE 3.5.6, Mandriva 2007.1
New:KDE 3.5.9, Kubuntu 8.04
(I don't use kmail, kwallet, KOrganizer...)

Can I use the same /home/user/.kde and keep switching back and forth? it
would most convinient, as I expect to take some time to install
everything that I need in the new distro...

Or would you recommend a little patience and Make a fresh start with
*KDE4*?

yes. i've done it with a /home dedicated partition. i've just put the
right partition in the 2 distros /etc/fstab and it worked well.

In my experience it isn't safe to use the same KDE config directory
(/home/user/.kde etc) for two different distros, since the config files
can have incompatibilities. So when you switch between distros, you may
have to reconfigure some apps each time. Since the two versions of KDE are
similar, you might find that it works, but it isn't guaranteed.

you might take as an example the gentoo slotted kde4 and kde3.5 installs. on
it you can use both of the desktop chosing between the two of them at login.
but it might be though to put up the same system on other distros, though.
practically gentoo uses a dinamic linking of the .kde home dirs that are
independent from each other, to the .kde in the home directory. based on the
version you want to use the link will point to one home or to the other.
there's also a hook to use programs of kde4 under 3.5 or viceversa by
symlinking env vars and config dirs between them. if you experience problems
my advice is to do some symlinking on the dirs that are troublesome. that
should fix the issues. nowadays the programs are compatible and use almost
the same dirs on the various distros.
