My system (RH9 on PIII) worked yesterday, but this morning it failed to
    start X. The error is:
Failed to load module "bitmap" (module does not exist, 0)

The log is attached, but I think it's just a symptom of something else,
    because
        rpm -V XFree86
tells me that several files are missing,
        ls -l
in those directories gives errors for the named files,
        fsck /usr
says it's clean, but forcing the check shows lots of problems.

This is the second time this symptom (Failed to load module "bitmap",
and fs inconsistencies for files in the package) has appeared. The
first time, I had to re-install the OS from scratch. This time,
forcibly (re)installing XFree86-4.3.0-2.i386.rpm did the trick.

I suspected HW the first time, but now that it's happened again after a
complete reinstall (and manual repartitioning), I'm thinking software
(or user error...) Will appreciate any help or add'l info.

    Nick Nichols
