Hi, Tom.
In RH9.0, redhat-config-xfree86 configures hardware aspects of X.
Anytime I received an "out of range" error it's been that X is
attempting to overdrive the monitor. I've never had to touch
/etc/sysconfig/hwconf, but I have had to use r-c-x to throttle the
refresh rates back a bit.
