creating users meant for services

hi.
i am just installing and configuraing mysql and i started to think about
users that are solely meant to run services. i imagine that for those
users you wouldn't use 'useradd servicename' because then you'd just
fill up your /home directory with a bunch of wasted space.
what is the process for adding these types of users?
