Hey take a look at http://www.raxnet.net/products/cacti/ I have only worked
with Linux about a year or so part time and I found this to be very easy to
install and configure (all web based) it uses the RRD tool. Very nice
graphs and great support. It also has a plug in you can get on the forum
that allows you to zoom in to 5 min. incremental! Very NICE!

It's /etc/mrtg/mrtg.cfg that needs to be modified and it's this
configuration file that needs to be updated with the mrtg_total specific
entries. I've included my first interface in mrtg.cfg below. Note that I
specified the directory that the graphs went into so they end up in
    /var/www/mrtg/graphs/mrtg_total

    # Created by
    # /usr/bin/cfgmaker --global 'WorkDir: /var/www/mrtg/graphs' --global
    'Options[_]: growright,bits' public@firewall.ewilts.org

    ### Global Config Options

    # for UNIX
    # WorkDir: /home/http/mrtg

    # or for NT
    # WorkDir: c:\mrtgdata

    ### Global Defaults

    # to get bits instead of bytes and graphs growing to the right
    # Options[_]: growright, bits

    WorkDir: /var/www/mrtg/graphs
    Options[_]: growright,bits
