    This was the case on one of my servers on EL3. I had to manualy restart the cron deamon in order to make the changes (to the crontab) work. But I didn't need to do that on other distros, thogh.

    You don't need to restart the cron daemon
    crond read every 60 seconds the crontab, in order to search for new
    instructions
