    # mt -f /dev/st0 status
    SCSI 2 tape drive:
    File number=0, block number=0, partition=0.
Tape block size 1024 bytes. Density code 0x80 (DLT
    15GB uncomp. or
    Ecrix).
Soft error count since last status=0
    General status bits on (41010000):

Hmmmm. It's a DLT but your blocksize is being
reported as a 1024. It might possibly need to be set
    to 0 first. Try:

    mt -f /dev/st0 setblk 0

Then write a small amount of data to the tape:

    tar cvf /dev/st0 /etc/hosts

    Then try that dump command.
