if the second nic is used for backups on a private backup lan like so:
192.168.1.0/24--eth0-[server]--eth1--192.168.2.0/24----[backup
device/server]
then there should not be a route associate with eth1 and packet
forwarding should not be turned on as the server shouldn't be routing
packets between the networks.
what does your routing table look like?
what does /etc/sysctl.conf look like?
