Re: Red Hat Certification

I think my only concern for not putting forth the money for it was that I
have just started using it as a server instead of my regular desktop so
things like ipchains and email is a new concept for me to use on the server
side. The other thing to was that I wanted to get it done before I was done
with college and the 2 year life cycle kind of put me off for getting it at
the moment.

I've had a fair amount of Suse experience, and Gentoo experience (4+
years). I will say that I don't think I would have passed the tests if I
had not attended the classes. There's only so much you're going to learn
yourself unless you put together a comprehensive syllabus in the beginning
and stick to it. This is available from Redhat's site by the way.

On the other hand, my previous experience proved to be an invaluable
foundation on which to build my Redhat experience. But perhaps the
biggest
benefit from taking the classes, was that it really boosted my enthusiasm
for Redhat as a company and as a distribution. Prior to, I had considered
Redhat to be vanilla linux, looking to make a buck from a mediocre
distribution.

I'm now looking to finish up a few more endorsements and snatch the RHCA.

How much RH experience did the people who passed have before studying
and passing the exams. The reason why I ask is because I was thinking
of taking all of the courses but I would be paying for them out of
pocket and really don't want to spend the thousands of dollars to do so..

Thanks again for the information.

In case you don't get approval, I passed the RHCE tests under 3 and 4
without taking the classes. Using a good self-study book, studying off

the Prep Guide, and buying a copy of VMware Workstation worked well
for me, but it did suck away my life outside work for a few weeks.
Just make sure you have lots of RAM in your system, VMware will suck
it up really fast.

One nice part about VMware for studying is being able to take a
snapshot of a system and throughly trash it practicing for the
troubleshooting section and then being able to discard anything you've

done by reverting to the snapshot.
